A charity website rebuilt around one question: how can I help?

Triathlon Trust is the official charity of British Triathlon. It funds swim, bike and run programmes for young people who face the biggest barriers to sport. Our founder, Gabriel, redesigned its website end to end as a pro-bono project at _VOIS: a new structure, a new look and new features, all built to make it easy to take part, volunteer, donate or sponsor.

A big mission, an old website and no clear way in.

Triathlon Trust uses triathlon to change young lives in schools, clubs and communities where cost and access keep children out of sport. Its old website didn’t show that. It was dated, hard to navigate and gave supporters no clear way to help.

There was no written brief. The scope was shaped together with the charity: rethink what the site is for, then build the structure, the design and the new features around it.

Every page had to answer one question: how can I help?

What the new site had to do

  • Show where the charity works, not just what it believes
  • Turn interest into action: take part, volunteer, donate, sponsor
  • Give donors simple, trusted ways to give
  • Work as well on the phone as on desktop

From sitemap to every screen.

Gabriel led the design at _VOIS as a pro-bono project for the charity: the new information architecture and sitemap, a content plan for every page, three homepage directions, and the full UI for desktop and mobile, reviewed with the charity section by section.

What we owned

  • Sitemap and information architecture
  • A content plan for every page
  • Three homepage directions
  • UI and visual design for desktop and mobile
  • The interactive Active Places map and place pages
  • Donation, volunteering and sponsorship journeys

Context

  • A pro-bono project delivered by the _VOIS team
  • Client: Triathlon Trust, the official charity of British Triathlon
  • No original brief: the scope was defined with the charity along the way
  • Content and data confirmed with the charity page by page

Four decisions behind the redesign.

1

Show the impact on a map

A charity working in 17 places across England needs to show where, not just say it.

Options considered

A list of programmes, or an interactive map with a page for every place.

The choice

Active Places: a map of 17 locations across six regions, searchable by region, each opening into its own page with local activities, data and partners.

Trade-off accepted

More content for the charity to keep up to date, in exchange for impact people can see close to home.

2

One door for every kind of help

Supporters want to help in very different ways.

Options considered

Scatter donate, volunteer and sponsor links across the site, or gather them in one place.

The choice

A Get involved hub with five clear routes: take part, volunteer, donate, support and sponsor, each with its own page.

Trade-off accepted

One more level in the navigation, in exchange for an obvious path for everyone who wants to help.

3

Make giving simple and trusted

People give more readily through platforms they already know.

Options considered

A custom payment form, or established donation platforms.

The choice

Single and regular donations through PayPal and JustGiving, plus options for companies such as payroll and matched giving.

Trade-off accepted

Less control over the payment step, in exchange for trust and no payment handling for a small team.

4

Tools a small charity can run

A charity team has little time or budget for upkeep.

Options considered

Feature-rich custom tools, or simple, proven services.

The choice

A Mailchimp newsletter (free up to 500 subscribers and GDPR compliant) instead of a WordPress plugin built for the US market.

Trade-off accepted

Fewer bespoke features, in exchange for a site the team can run on its own.

The redesign gave Triathlon Trust a clear structure and a full set of desktop and mobile screens built around getting involved. The charity launched the new site in this design and later switched some of its features off, so the screens here show the complete version as it was delivered.
